Honda Type R Hatchback: A Legend Born

In 1999, Honda's tuning company, Spoon Sports, designed an N1 racing version of the Type R hatchback that would change the game forever. The EK9 Civic Type R was born, and it boasted a B16B engine with a redline increased from 8,400 rpm to 11,000 rpm. This power boost, combined with other tweaks, made the Type R a force to be reckoned with on the track.

Production of the EK9 totaled 16,000 units, making it a rare and coveted model among enthusiasts. The Type Rx was the final model of the EK9 generation, introducing a range of new features such as a CD player, body-colored retractable electric door mirrors, power windows, auto air conditioning, keyless entry unlock system, aluminium sports pedals, and a carbon type centre panel.

In contrast to its luxury counterparts, the standard grey EK interior featured manual windows, no air conditioning, and fewer creature comforts. However, this simplicity allowed the Type R to focus on what mattered most – performance.

The Civic Type R Motor Sports edition was introduced in 1998, boasting even more aggressive styling and a range of aerodynamic upgrades. The EK9 could reach a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph), making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Performance figures were equally impressive, with a 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) acceleration time of just 6.7 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.3 seconds. The EK9 was only available for sale in Japan, but its reputation soon spread worldwide among enthusiasts.

The interior featured red Recaro bucket seats, red door cards, red Type R floor mats, a titanium shift knob, and a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel – a testament to the model's racing heritage. For the first time, Honda used a strategically seam-welded monocoque chassis to improve chassis rigidity, giving the Type R unparalleled handling and stability.

The B16B engine produced 185 PS (136 kW / 182 hp) at 8,200 rpm and 160 N⋅m (118 lb-ft) of torque at 7,500 rpm from a 1.6L displacement – an impressive feat for a naturally aspirated engine. The EK9 shared many characteristics with its sibling, the Integra Type R DC2/JDM DB8, including omission of sound deadening and other weight reduction measures.

The first Civic to receive the Type R badge was introduced on August 19, 1997, as the EK9. Like its sibling, the Integra Type R DC2/JDM DB8, the Civic SiR's transformation into a Type R was achieved by working on the base model and improving it to Honda's idea of a car capable of high performance on the circuit.

The contributing base model was the JDM Civic 3-door hatchback called the SiR (code-named EK4). The first Civic to receive the 'Type R' nameplate was based on the sixth-generation of the fan-base 'EK' Civic. Today, the Honda Type R hatchback remains a legend among enthusiasts, with its blend of performance, handling, and style making it a true icon of the automotive world.
